Symptoms We Treat

Mass-RI Veterinary ER is available for both emergency and urgent care 7 days a week.

If your pet is experiencing any symptoms below or pain, we recommend bringing them to ER immediately.

Disease or Illness

  • Stumbling, collapse, dragging or not using legs
  • Sudden, severe changes in behavior (friendly pet acting aggressive, hiding all day, etc.)
  • Not able to urinate
  • Vomiting and diarrhea for more than 24hrs duration, especially if containing blood
  • Distended or bloated abdomen
  • Sudden, severe lethargy or loss of appetite
  • Severe allergic reactions such as facial swelling
  • Pregnant animal struggling to give birth (greater than 2 hours in between deliveries)

Trauma

  • Traumatic injury (hit by car, hit by blunt object, falls)
  • Severe wounds (bite wounds, puncture wounds, anything that bleeds heavily)
  • Heatstroke
  • Nose bleeding

Ingestion

  • Foods such as chocolate, grapes/raisins, or any gum or candy containing xylitol (“sugar-free” substitute)
  • Medications, both prescription or over-the-counter
  • Plants such as lilies, wild mushrooms, or marijuana
  • Household chemicals such as antifreeze, mouse or rat poison, ice melt
  • Non-digestible objects (toys, clothing, string, sharp objects, etc.)
